My Role

I acted as team leader and product designer from overall project planning to UI/UX design, all from scratch. Also, I drafted the project requirements report and detailed design report, and presented to our sponsor Huawei.

About

This project was sponsored by Huawei. Based on Huawei's newly released Harmony OS and whole-house smart home system, our team developed new opportunities and evidence-based design solutions. We won the winner of the UXDA International Experience Design Competition and won a prize of 8000 dollars.

Introduction

Vocal Space is a virtual show application focused on improving the interactive entertainment experience at home

With Vocal Space, before the online show starts, audiences can create their own entertainment space to set up smart furniture in advance. When watching online show, It will connect multiple devices, and switch scenes in real-time according to the performance rhythm to create a multi-scene immersive experience. After the show, the audiences’ data will be recorded to customize the personal special memory.

Problem Statement

The audiences fail to get immersive experience from the online show

Against the backdrop of the global epidemic, online shows have become a new form of entertainment. The remote stage, limited interaction, and lack of equipment support make it impossible for users to get enough satisfaction and pleasure in online shows.

How might we develop an innovative virtual show product and smart home service that improve audio-visual experience, enhance interaction, and expand associated services?

Desk Research

Harmony OS is a distributed operating to collaborate and interconnect with multiple smart devices collaborate and interconnect with multiple smart devices on the Internet of Thing ecosystem.

We learnt about Huawei's technical capabilities through technical, academic documents, and video materials to have a clear understanding of what we can apply in show scenarios

Research Guideline

To get to know user’s virtual show experience, my team conducted 25 in-depth interviews. The questions provided a framework for our research, competitive analysis, and user testings.

What smart homes do they have now? What kind of scene do they use it?

Is there any pains being a smart home user?

If they already use smart home for entertainment, what would that scenario look like?

How do you think smart home systems will bring a huge improvement to the online experience?

In-depth Interview

To sum up my findings from user research, I have concluded the major Pain Points we found that users experienced in our platform.

Distance restriction hinder emotional communication

“I cannot interact with singers in the same real space, and existing online concerts only provide tedious forms of interaction such as commenting and giving gifts.”

Lack of full-fledged concert experience

“Online shows only focuses on stage performances, which lacks many aspects of shows that I enjoy, buying peripheral products, meeting friends, cheering, and sharing joy together.”

Low ability to configure smart home entertainment scenarios

“I watch online concerts on my laptop, I don't know how to use smart furniture to make my space more ambience, and I think it will be troublesome.”

Frustrated and downhearted mood after the show

“After the show, I left nothing but the temporary memories in my mind. I don't know when this kind of happiness will be next time.”

First experience as a design team lead

Restrospective

It was a memorable experience working with a creative team as a design team lead. I gained a lot of experience in developing plans, coordinating team responsibilities, facilitating team collaboration, and reporting to the sponsoring company, Huawei. I am very grateful to work with my team members because this project lasted eight months and we were in four cities, but we met online regularly every week and completed the project efficiently.
